Update - Campus Telephone System Back Up as of 7:15 AM Saturday, November 7, 2009

The Cornell campus phone system is back on line as of 7:15 AM. An uninterruptible power supply(UPS)that serves the phone system did not operate properly when power failed this morning. This caused the main telephone switch to go down.

CIT crews have installed a replacement UPS. All systems are now back on-line.

Researchers and those responsible for equipment within buildings may wish to check their systems.

Please report any problems or concerns to the Facilities Customer Service Center at 255-5322.

This is the last planned update.

=============================

The Cornell campus phone system remains down after a power outage that occurred at about 3:10 AM Saturday morning, November 7, 2009.

The loss of power was caused by a tripped line protection relay on the main campus electric feed. Crews were able to switch to a backup feed and restore power at about 4:45 AM.

CIT crews are on site working to restore the telephone system.

If you have an emergency, please use a non-campus phone, e.g. cell phone, to call 911. The Tompkins County 911 center will contact Cornell Police.

Please check http://www.cornell.edu/cuinfo/specialconditions/ for further updates. Another update will be posted at about 8:00 AM.

Emergency Notification System test scheduled for Wednesday, October 14th at 12:10pm

Dear Cornellian:

Cornell will test its emergency notification systems beginning at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, October 14. These systems include the sirens/public address (PA) system and voice and text messaging.

The siren/PA system test will begin with an alert tone followed by the broadcast of a 25-second message saying: "This is a test. This is a test of the emergency notification system. This is only a test. This is a test of the emergency notification system. This is only a test." The message will be followed by an alert tone that will sound for 60 seconds. A sample of the alert tone can be accessed at http://www.epr.cornell.edu.

All students, faculty and staff who have registered to receive emergency information via text will receive a text message with the sender ID of 55629 OR 83972. Those who have registered to receive emergency information via a voice call will receive a call from caller ID (1)607-254-4636. The message will be "This is a test of the Cornell Emergency Notification system. This is only a test."

When you hear the sirens and receive the test message, you need do nothing. We have timed the test to begin when classes change to minimize disruption.

Cornell's emergency notification system is a critical component of our emergency response. Every Cornellian has a role to play in emergency preparedness. If you have not yet entered your emergency contact information, please do so now.
" Students should go to https://selfservice.adminapps.cornell.edu/studentcenter/ and select the links for Emergency Contact Info and Emergency Mass Notification.
" Employees should go to https://ee.ohr.cornell.edu and click on the Personal Information tab and select the links for EMN Phone Number and Emergency Contact(s).

Thank you for supporting Cornell's continued emergency response efforts.

Crime alert: Robberies reported near Cornell campus

This message is to alert members of the Cornell community about recent robberies that have occurred near the Cornell campus.

On Monday Sept. 21, 2009, at approximately 12:30 a.m. there was a reported robbery at the Best Western Hotel located on Pine Tree Road, Ithaca, next to the East Hill Plaza. A suspect entered the hotel lobby and demanded money from the clerk; no weapon was displayed. The suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect is described as a white male, wearing blue jeans and a black jacket with the hood pulled over his head. He was further described as balding, stocky build and in his 30s or 40s. This incident is similar to two recent robberies at other local hotels:

On Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1:10 a.m., Tompkins County Sheriffs deputies responded to the Clarion Hotel, located at 1 Sheraton Drive, Ithaca, in regard to a reported robbery. The victim reported that at approximately 1:05 a.m. a subject had entered the hotel and demanded money. The suspect then jumped over the counter, forced open a money drawer and removed cash. He then left the hotel on foot. There were no injuries as a result, and no weapon was displayed. The suspect was described as a white male with a dark complexion wearing a gray-colored hooded sweatshirt and jeans. The hood was pulled over the suspects hairline, and it appeared that he possibly was bald-headed. He also was described as having no facial hair and being approximately 6 foot tall.

On Friday, Sept. 18, at 1:05 a.m., sheriffs deputies responded to the Ramada Inn at 2310 N. Triphammer Road, Ithaca, for a reported robbery. Upon arrival, it was determined that a male subject had been observed behind the front counter rummaging through drawers when the clerk returned after having stepped away. The subject fled the area with an undisclosed amount of cash. No weapon was displayed and no one was injured. The subject was described as a white male, 5 foot 8 inches to 5 foot 10 inches in height, in his late 30s or early 40s. He was reportedly wearing blue jeans and a baseball-style cap with a white bill with blue lines on it. He also had light scruff on his face. Given the nature of the incident, it is presumed to be related to a previous event at the Clarion Hotel, although this has not been positively determined.

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to contact investigators at the Tompkins County Sheriffs Department at (607) 257-1345. Their anonymous tip line can also be reached at (607) 266-5420.

Please call the Cornell University Police whenever you see anything suspicious, if you feel threatened, have a safety concern or simply see a need for expanded police services to meet the community's needs.

Cornell Police stand ready to assist you in any way possible, and can be reached 24 hours a day by calling (607) 255-1111. Remember this number. Save it on your cell phone. And in an emergency, please call 911.

This message is posted for the Cornell community in compliance with the "Timely Notice" provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 (http://www.securityoncampus.org/).

2009 Fall Opening Traffic and Parking Plan

On behalf of the Fall Opening Committee, we are writing to remind you that 3,500 new students and their families will be arriving at Cornell on Friday, August 21. With this will come the inevitable influx of traffic and congestion as they try to find their way around campus.

We have worked with local and state officials to create a traffic plan, which will minimize the impact of Fall Opening. In addition, we are asking for the cooperation of all faculty and staff.

Please consider the following as you make your transportation and parking plans:

Allow staff who ask to take a vacation or personal day on Friday, August 21 to do so, as long as your staffing and workload permits.

Avoid arranging deliveries of equipment or supplies on this day.

Avoid driving on campus, if possible. Campus Road and the North and West Campus areas will be extremely congested.

If your staff must come to North and West Campus, please inform them about special traffic patterns that have been set up for the day in these areas.

Encourage the use of TCAT buses and car-pools. TCAT schedules can be found at: http://www.tcatbus.com/

Jessup Road will only be open for move-in traffic.

"A" Lot will be open only for new students and their parents ("A" permit holders will be notified separately about alternate parking).

For up-to-date access to event, construction, and emergency situations that can impact travel and parking, go to:
http://www.cornell.edu/cuinfo/specialconditions/

Faculty and staff cooperation with these traffic and parking arrangements is essential to minimizing the impact to the daily business of the campus. It will insure that fire and life safety access is maintained; and help ease the anxiety of a very stressful but exciting day for new students and their parents.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Switching of Campus Hi Voltage Equipment Scheduled for August 11 - 13, 2009

Contractor and Cornell crews will switch the electricity circuits that feed campus facilities beginning on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 and ending on Thursday, August 13, 2009. They will perform ground shunt and integrity tests on equipment being commissioned as part of the Cornell Combined Heating and Power Project (CCHPP).

Switching operations will begin each day at approximately 7:00 AM and last for about 8 hours. No interruption of electric power is expected. Campus-wide Telephone Outages Scheduled for Friday morning, January 9

The following message is being sent to everyone at Cornell, and previously was sent to several email lists. Please excuse duplicates you may receive as a result.

*Extremely Important* - This outage affects options for seeking help in the event of a problem or emergency in campus buildings.
----

On Friday, January 9, from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., the Cornell telephone system and AUDIX voice mail will be unavailable.

During this outage, every campus phone will be without a dial tone, including elevator, emergency, and Blue Light phones. AUDIX will also be unavailable.

The Cornell University Police will increase their patrols during the outage. In the event of an emergency, dial 911 from a cell phone or pull the closest building's fire alarm.

Campus emergency notification systems (PA, sirens, and text messaging) will remain operational during this outage, except for notification via campus telephones.

This outage is necessary so that the vendor Avaya can apply a patch to the campus phone switch.

After service is restored:

On some digital (multi-line) phones, the Speaker button will be flashing. Press the Shift/Select button and then the Speaker button to fix it.

Call Management users who were logged in prior to the outage will need to log in again.

Questions or concerns before and after the outage may be directed to NCS Operations Support at ncs-os@cornell.edu or 254-NCS1.

Thank you for your understanding.

Students experiencing travel disruptions should contact RHDs; Saturday recognition ceremony still on

We are continuing to monitor weather conditions, and today's winter storm is expected to be out of the area by tonight (Friday, Dec. 19). Roads are being plowed and traffic is continuing to move, though slowly. The university remains open, and final exams will be complete late this afternoon.

Residence halls will remain open and food will be made available for students who are stranded on campus due to travel disruptions; and accommodations for those students will be available through Tuesday, if necessary. Students who are experiencing travel problems are asked to contact their residence hall directors (RHDs).

The January graduate recognition ceremony scheduled for this Saturday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. in Barton Hall is still being held. Visit this site -- commencement.cornell.edu -- for further information and updates on the ceremony.

Further updates will be posted to this site, as warranted.

Walkway Closures Across Campus

In an effort to reduce the expense for maintaining walkways where alternate routes are easily available, the university will be closing several sidewalks and pathways across the campus during the winter season.
Cornell Plantations' F.R. Newman Arboretum will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning Wednesday, November 26, 2008 through March 2009. Visitors are encouraged to park their vehicles in the Wildflower Garden parking lot located just west of the Caldwell Road / Forest Home Drive intersection (southwest of the one-lane bridge), or in the parking area located just north of the Forest Home Drive entrance into the Arboretum. Vehicles are not allowed to park in front of the Caldwell Road or Forest Home Drive gates.

Hikers, please note: Cornell Plantations has closed portions of both the Cascadilla and Fall Creek Gorge Trails for the winter due to snow, ice, and falling rocks that create unsafe conditions. The Cascadilla Gorge Trail is closed from downtown to College Avenue. The Fall Creek Trail is closed from Stewart Avenue to the Fall Creek Suspension Bridge. The trails will reopen in spring when conditions allow.

A map of the routes affected can be found at http://www.fm.cornell.edu/fmn_wntrswcl.cfm

Your cooperation in planning a few extra minutes for your commute will ultimately save on salt usage and fuel, and allow man hours to be dedicated to those areas of highest priority.

Any concerns should be directed to the Customer Service Center at 255-5322.
