NestWatch

Short Description

A citizen science project focused on nesting birds! It teaches people how to monitor nests & collect data used to track breeding birds.

Description

Citizen Science, as practiced at Cornell Lab of Ornithology, involves the public in gathering important data to track changes in wild bird populations at the continental or even global scale. Our newest project, NestWatch, www.nestwatch.org teaches people how to effectively monitor bird nests and submit their nest records online. Our participants are people of all ages who care about the natural world. They range from families with children to retired adults and professional biologists who monitor nesting birds in backyards, parks, green spaces and public lands. Participants make visits to individual nests during the spring and summer and collect information on the location, habitat, species, number of eggs, and number of young in the nest. NestWatch is free to join and all observations are submitted online where they can be easily downloaded using our new data-out tools. The state-of-the-art Google map tools allow users to also view and query trail summaries from other nest monitors.
