Fuchs: Collaboration, not centralization, is the watchword
- Cornell Chronicle - May 27, 2010
Provost Kent Fuchs, at the request of President Skorton, has led Cornell University in a comprehensive, coordinated set of planning and implementation activities upon which the future health of our great university depends. This work had two goals: (1) to position Cornell for excellence in priority areas, and (2) to ensure the ongoing financial health of the university. The directions Cornell takes in years to come have been determined by crucial decisions that were made in the months past.
Much of the work involved soliciting ideas from the Cornell community, launching academic task forces and partnering with a global consulting firm to administrative cost savings across the university. Moving forward, a three-pronged approach was adopted:
- Twenty academic task forces have made recommendations, which were considered by Provost Fuchs, on strategies to enhance the university's competitiveness in priority areas despite the difficult economic environment.
- A strategic plan, released May 27, 2010, was drafted by a committee headed by Ed Lawler, the Martin P. Catherwood Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations. This plan identifies the goals, strategies, tactics and metrics that defines the Cornell of the future.
- The newly formed Initiatives Coordination Office, headed by Associate Vice President Paul Streeter, is helping the university achieve operational savings in a number of areas, including: procurement; facilities; information technology; finance, human resources and communications; and organization and management of support activities. He will provide regular updates on this process.
President Skorton and Provost Fuchs were responsible for directing the activities of all three aspects of Reimaging Cornell, as well as decisions made based on the recommendations that emerged from the process.
This web site serves as a comprehensive source for information on all aspects of Reimagining Cornell. New information will be added as it is released. If you have questions or suggestions for the president or provost please send them to the reimagining suggestion box. There is also a suggestion box for your comments back to the strategic plan team. We encourage you to get involved.
