While most individuals who contract the flu are able to recover safely without any medical intervention, it's essential to consult by phone with a health care provider in some situations. This poster from Gannett Health Services contains essential information for students at Cornell (faculty and staff should contact their primary care providers).

CDC updates higher education guidelines

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have updated influenza-response guidelines for colleges and universities in the United States for the 2009-2010 academic year. Cornell healthcare providers and administrators are currently reviewing the guidelines to determine how they will inform the university's plans, policies and communications going forward. The campus community has been broadly engaged in preparations for a complex flu season since the novel H1N1/2009 ("swine") influenza made its first appearance in spring 2009. Plans have been guided by the CDC and the New York State Department of Health, as well as Cornell's commitment to support the health and safety of its faculty, staff, students and home community, and the university's academic and research missions.

Cornell summer students report flu-like illness, cases remain mild

A number of cases of influenza-like illness have now been reported among summer students at Cornell. Additional cases are likely to arise in other campus programs, departments, and camps. Not all cases of this illness are attributable to the new H1N1 ("swine") influenza virus. However, public health officials do not recommend routine testing to determine the viral type, as the same treatment and isolation guidelines apply regardless of the kind of flu (i.e., seasonal flu or new H1N1 flu). Luckily, the level of illness experienced locally continues to remain relatively mild. Should you or a family member develop flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat), please stay home until you have consulted by phone with your health provider. Students should call Gannett Health Services at 607.255.5155. A health care provider is available by phone 24/7.
