"I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study."

These words are inscribed on Eddy Gate, and the Cornell University seal, and are usually attributed to Ezra Cornell. According to the University Archives, the earliest discovered written occurence of these words was in a letter written by Ezra Cornell. However, it is unclear who first concieved of this phrase. It was likely a result of the collaboration of several people involved it the university's founding.
