Related Information

The Cornell Nutrient Analysis Laboratories provide accurate and cost effective analysis of soil, plant, and water samples for faculty, staff, and others. Two branches, Extension and Research, function under CNAL. The Extension branch provides analysis and recommendations services to commercial growers and home gardeners in New York State, while the Research division offers soil, plant and water analyses to research clients locally, nationally and internationally.

Water Quality Program - Water Testing Lab Directory

The Cooperative Extension Water Quality Program has links to a directory of water testing labs certified by the NYS Department of Health, and publications and links about water testing. This is an extension program only, and does not have its own water testing lab.

Diagnostic Lab

  • Veterinary College
    Diagnostic Lab
    Hours: M-F 8:00am-5:00pm
  • 607 253-3900

The Diagnostic Lab does testing only for bacteria. The charge is $15. A sterile container must be picked up at the lab and the sample submitted from 8am-4pm Monday through Thursday. The Lab does not test water on Friday.

The Health Department will only test water if it is a doctor ordered investigation, it is for a residential unit under permit with the Health Department (apartment complex, mobile home park), or for a tenant on the landlord's private water supply. They will not test water from Cayuga Lake or any surface water whose purpose is not for drinking.

If possible, avoid calling the Water Testing laboratory until all other options have been tried. The first thing inquirers should do is call the Health Department at 607 274-6688.
