Benefactors Colonel Henry Sackett and Robert H. Treman, both trustees and alumni, were instrumental in assuring the preservation of the gorges and waterways close to the university.
In addition to the stone bridge, above, that bears Sackett's name, a series of falls in Cascadilla Gorge are known as the "Sackett Cascades," and a portion of the Fall Creek Gorge path is known as "The Sackett Trail."
"His noble bequest will save for the future that treasure of landscape, gorge, and glen," university trustees declared in their memorial to the colonel. "Its value for the spiritual culture of youth is beyond price."
