With its $500 million New Life Sciences Initiative, Cornell University plans to harness the expertise of faculty in computer science, genetics, plant and animal biology, and human health.

Genomics, the study of how genes affect living organisms, is at the core of the initiative, which will also focus on chemical biology, environmental sciences, and biomedical engineering.

The initiative includes plans to construct a 240,000-square-foot facility specially designed for life sciences studies, as well as salaries for more than 75 new professors, research tools such as DNA sequencers, and support for spin-off businesses utilizing the new technology.
