Built into the shale sides of the gorges, the one-third-mile trail leading from Cascadilla Park to Collegetown freezes long before campus sidewalks turn slick in winter and thaws weeks after daffodils have begun sending up their shoots in the Plantations each spring. To protect hikers from such treacherous conditions, the City of Ithaca closes the trail each November and reopens it in April, once the gorge pathways are free of ice and snow.

But that doesn't mean Cornellians hibernate during Ithaca's long winter months. Instead they cross-country ski on the campus golf course, skate at Lynah Rink, and snow-shoe and hike in Cornell Plantations.
