Hundreds of basketball games and volleyball matches have been held in the Newman Arena, above. Until January 2003, when the Friedman Wrestling Center opened, Cornell's grapplers held their matches here as well.
Pennants of their Ivy League competitors hang from the rafters, and the bleachers in Newman Arena expand to provide seating for more than 4,500 spectators.
Most indoor spaces at Cornell serve multiple purposes, and the arena is no exception. World leaders including Nobel Peace Prize-winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa and Lee Teng-hui '68 of Taiwan have delivered speeches to audiences seated in the bleachers.
