Buzz Spector on Jeni Wightman's 'Visualizing Meaning'
Art professor Buzz Spector speaks at the opening of "Visualizing Meaning: Copying the Masters," the inaugural exhibit in the new gallery space at Mann Library.
Artist Jeni Wightman takes important and meaningful visual representations of data selected by Cornell faculty and incorporates them into household items such as blankets and rocking chairs. By changing the context of the theoretical framework of academic discourse, this installation hopes to both subsume the viewer into the data as well as engage more senses in comprehending information. Mixing the perceptual field of art and the conceptual field of science, Visualizing Meaning humorously places the relationship between lived and charted experience in a dialogue.
