The fourth annual Department of Near Eastern Studies poetry night, "Poetry and Pastry: an evening of Near Eastern, Mediterranean and Ithacan poetry," was emceed by Shawkat M. Toorawa, associate professor of Arabic Literature.

Poetry and Pastry featured undergraduate and graduate students reading in more than 30 languages, from Sumerian and Syriac to Occitan and Icelandic, from Arabic and Urdu to Greek and Georgian, from Hebrew and Hindi to Persian and Punjabi. Also reading are noted Ithacan poets, including Ken McClane and Roald Hoffman.

The event was presented in collaboration with the Society for the Humanities, the French Studies Program, the Mediterranean Studies Initiative, the Department of English, and the Department of Comparative Literature.
