President David J. Skorton hosts a special presentation of Higher Ed in the Round, as part of the 2007 Atkinson Forum in American Studies. Skorton is joined by Dr. Harold Varmus, president and CEO of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, to discuss the future of science in America.

Former director of the National Institutes of Health and co-recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize for studies of the genetic basis of cancer, Varmus is a champion of an open access system for scientific papers, advocating that scientists, rather than journal editors, should have control over the distribution of their research.

This program includes excerpts from Dr. Varmus' lecture followed by a conversation between President Skorton, Dr. Varmus, and the audience.
