Mahmood Mamdani, the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at Columbia University, discussed the history of civil war in Sudan in a lecture on campus April 29.
Mamdani, who specializes in the study of African history and politics, stressed that human rights activism must identify the roots of a crisis rather than focusing merely on the perpetrators. He criticized Western media—particularly the Save Darfur movement—for politicizing the violence.
Mamdani's talk was part of the Einaudi Center's Foreign Policy Distinguished Speaker Series.
