An optoelectronically innervated soft prosthetic hand, developed in the Organic Robotics Lab of assistant professor Robert Shepherd, shows the ability to touch three tomatoes and choose the ripest. The hand is equipped with optical waveguides that gauge the amount of deformation in the hand by the amount of light lost through the hand's outer skin.
