We're interested in video and audio content that helps us show the world what's happening here at Cornell. Cornell people, events, research—you name it. In order to post your content on CornellCast, we will need the following:

Information about your content or event. Download and complete one of the following (.doc):

- event recording request form. Use this to request a video crew for an upcoming event.
- content submission form. Use this if you already have video or audio you would like us to post.

--> Email your completed form to Tara Walworth at trw43@cornell.edu.

Permission from the speaker/artist/participant(s). Once your completed request form is received, we will contact you with instructions.

Video and/or audio file(s) for streaming and download. We can create the files we need from your original(s) or you can can create your own CornellCast files. If you prefer the do-it-yourself approach, please refer to our compression specifications below. When you're ready to send us your content, find our campus mailing address and electronic submission instructions below.

Compression Specifications (last updated 11/11/09)

Typically, for each piece we add to the collection, we produce three files: 1). a Flash-compatible video file for streaming on the main CornellCast site and in the Flash player we offer for embedding in other web pages; 2). a branded, iPod/iPhone-compatible video file for download. This is referenced in our rss feeds, distributed to iTunes, and can be downloaded from the video info tab on our site; and 3). an audio-only file (mp3) for the folks who prefer to listen while they walk, drive or work. The mp3 is also made available for download via rss, iTunes and our site.

Exceptions: if the piece is audio-only to begin with, we only create the mp3; if the piece is highly visual and the meaning/message would be lost in an audio version, we skip the mp3.

1. VIDEO file for streaming in Flash player

File extension: .mp4 or .flv
Codec: H.264 or on2vp6
Screen Size: 640 x 360 for 16:9; 480 x 360 for 4:3
Bit Rate: 550 kbps
Frame Rate: Same as source (typically 29.97 fps)
Key Frame Rate: every 30 frames or 1 per second
Audio format: AAC

If you have QuickTime H.264 files (.mov) we may be able to use them just by changing the file extension to .mp4 -- it's worth a shot!

If your content is high-motion and/or you find that the picture quality is significantly degraded at 550 kbps, you can submit multiple versions at higher bitrate(s); however, the 550 kbps version is required.

Branding requirements: None. You may use a custom intro and outro.

2. VIDEO file for download/iPod/iPhone

File extension: .mp4 or .m4v
Codec: H.264 -- low complexity version. (look for an Apple or iPod/iPhone preset in your video compression software: in Compressor, choose "H.264 for iPod", in QuickTime Pro choose "Movie to iPod")
Screen Size: 640 x 360 for 16x9; 640 x 480 for 4x3
Frame Rate: 30 fps
Audio format: AAC-LC

Note: You may also submit a high or best quality version for download (optional). We hope to be able to make a "high quality" option available to our users in the near future.

Branding requirements: The Cornell watermark should be used on all video files intended for download that are produced by colleges, schools, divisions, departments, organizations, and other units of Cornell University. The watermark is a simplified version of the Cornell Web Logo, adapted for use in video. It is intended to replace the standard Cornell heads and tails.

Download the Cornell video watermark (.psd)

- The watermark should be scaled to 18% and placed in the lower right corner of your video.
- If you choose to use a custom intro and outro, the watermark need not be placed on those screens.
- If your unit wishes to use its own watermark as well, place the unit watermark in the lower left corner.

3. AUDIO file

File extension: .mp3
Sampling Rate: 44.1 kHz
Bit Rate: 64 kbps Mono or 128 kbps Stereo (depending on source)

Branding requirements: You will need to identify the relationship of your content to Cornell University, via spoken words, at the start and end of the audio version. Visit the Cornell Identity website for guidelines, and to download prerecorded Cornell audio signatures.
