Nobel prize-winning journalist and nonfiction writer Svetlana Alexievich presented the 2016-17 Bartels World Affairs Fellowship Lecture at Cornell on Sept. 12. Alexievich, who grew up in Belarus, described how she developed her unique literary style, a collage of human voices that collectively tell the story of tragedy and preserve the history that otherwise leaves no trace – the stories of average survivors. The lecture was delivered in Russian using projected subtitles in English. In this video, the Russian is dubbed over in English by Valzhyna Mort Hutchinson, assistant professor of English.

The Bartels program, sponsored by the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, brings prominent international leaders to Cornell to foster a broadened world view among Cornell students.
