There are many challenges in the areas of energy, environment, and economic and human development that require significant and timely response. The need for action is made more urgent by the increasing world population, which is forecast to reach 9.5 billion by 2050.

Frank DiSalvo, a professor at Cornell and director of the Cornell Center for a Sustainable Future, outlines some of the challenges we face and the role of academic institutions in addressing these critical issues.
