South Baltimore is one of the most polluted places in the country, and the deep roots of its ecological problems, as well as its efforts towards a better future are explored by Chloe Ahmann, assistant professor in the Dept. of Anthropology in her new book "Futures After Progress: Hope and Doubt in Late Industrial Baltimore" (The University of Chicago Press, 2024). In this Chats in the Stacks book talk Ahmann shares her powerful ethnographic study of South Baltimore, exploring its industrial rise and fall, the deep roots of its ecological predicaments, as well as local rifts and competing visions and efforts to realize a better future. Ahmann shows how this community has become a battleground for competing political futures whose stakes reverberate and resonate well beyond its six square miles.
