South Baltimore is one of the most polluted places in the country, and the deep roots of its ecological problems, as well as its efforts towards a better future are explored by Chloe Ahmann, assistant professor in the Dept. of Anthropology in her new book "Futures After Progress: Hope and Doubt in Late Industrial Baltimore" (The University of Chicago Press, 2024). In this Chats in the Stacks book talk Ahmann shares her powerful ethnographic study of South Baltimore, exploring its industrial rise and fall, the deep roots of its ecological predicaments, as well as local rifts and competing visions and efforts to realize a better future. Ahmann shows how this community has become a battleground for competing political futures whose stakes reverberate and resonate well beyond its six square miles. An open access version of this book is available thanks to a TOME grant through Cornell University

Beginning on May 1, 2025, University Relations will no longer accept submissions to Cornell Video (formerly known as CornellCast). This is the first step toward decommissioning the service altogether.
Moving forward, we urge you to use the Video On Demand (VOD) service provided by CIT to host your video content. Instructions for uploading to VOD and general information about the platform can be found at the Video on Demand website.
We are working with CIT to determine the best path toward migrating existing videos in the Cornell Video collection to VOD. Owners of Cornell Video collections will be contacted in the coming weeks to facilitate this effort.
