Mani Sethuraman focuses on corporate disclosures and their effects on capital markets. In this study,
Sethuraman and his co-authors Kristina Rennekamp and Blake Steenhoven use the conversation as a
unit of analysis. Specifically, they examine the level of engagement between analysts and managers
during public earnings calls and use psychology and social linguistics to observe investor reaction to
varying levels of engagement. “We use a combination of experiments and archival data analysis in a
complementary fashion to validate our conclusions. Fundamentally, achieving a better understanding of
the forces shaping corporate communications and its usefulness to investors will help all stakeholders
perform their roles more effectively, leading to more efficient functioning of capital markets.”
