Davis, an English professor at SUNY Albany, is a master of very short stories, some no longer than a sentence. Her collections include "Break it Down" (1986), winner of the Whiting Writer's Award, "Samuel Johnson is Indignant" (2001), and "The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis" (2009).
