Asis Martinez-Jerez studies organizational design to drive employee behavior and customer engagement. His study of servant leadership has looked at varying employee responses to different incentives. When a manager is a servant leader, teams respond to incentives that reward team members, but if the rewards go to managers, team members are less likely to be inspired. Managers can inspire a team to be more productive when the firm offers a non-monetary team reward (like a shared night out) than when a monetary reward is offered.
