When NASCAR switched from leaded to unleaded fuel in 2007, the areas surrounding racetracks suddenly stopped absorbing historic and large doses of airborne lead. Since that time, Ivan Rudik and his collaborators have been able to measure changes in test scores for students in those elementary schools near the NASCAR races; the affected schools show significant improvement in student performance, akin to the effects of an increase in school child spending or reduction in class size, while similar schools in unaffected areas showed little change. This research will help inform the EPA in its upcoming review of lead exposure regulation.
