Professor Vishal Gaur researches using large scale detailed data to analyze manufacturing management problems in supply chains, retailing, and ecommerce. “The main theme in my work is to combine data with mathematical models and academic theory to construct practically useful solutions.” In one study, a retailer had implemented an automatic replenishment system but the managers were bypassing it, adding considerations that had been missed by the automated system. Combining the model and the human user, Gaur et al used this insight to create a better solution for the company. Gaur’s work has also recently examined the forecasting of retail sales, finding various correlations with stock market indices and constructing a model to estimate correlations’ usefulness to other applications.
